Today’s modern dentures are made of strong acrylic holding porcelain teeth to replace teeth that have been lost. A partial denture has a metal substructure that attaches to remaining teeth and only replaces a few teeth. A complete denture replaces all the teeth on your upper or lower arch. Sometimes dentures are referred to as a dental appliance. A quality denture will have a natural look, fit well in your mouth, and provides support for the cheeks and lips. Because denture rest on your gums, dental implants are necessary to support and anchor the denture.

Most dentures are made of a hard acrylic and can be made by a dental lab two different ways.

A conventional denture is made after all teeth have been extracted and the tissues (gums) have healed.
An immediate denture is fabricated and inserted immediately after the teeth are extracted and the tissues are allowed to heal under the denture. The healing process can take two to six months
An upper denture has acrylic, usually flesh colored, that covers the palate (roof of the mouth). This allows for suction but dental implants to support the denture are more ideal.
A lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to leave room for the tongue. Two to six dental implants are ideal to support the denture to make it fully functional for chewing.
Disposable materials

The denture teeth are made of porcelain to aid in chewing function. Dentures can be fabricated to fit over endodonticly treated teeth and a complete denture can be attached to dental implants to allow for a more secure fit of the appliance.

If you are considering dentures because of loss of teeth, please call our Littleton Dental office to set up an consolation before the extraction of the teeth. If you have an existing denture and need more support for chewing and enjoying food again, please call to find out how dental implants can make your dentures work like real teeth.

Regular dentist examinations are still important for patients that use dentures. Having a dentist check your gums and oral tissues one a years can catch disease or change before they cause major issues.
